I recently read in SFX[1] that Guillermo del Toro, annoyed with people describing Hobbit II as "filler" or "bridging material", insists itapos;s an essential part of the story.

Now, it may well be a perfectly good and worthy film. But given the storyapos;s been around for nigh-on sixty years, and weapos;ve never needed it before, it canapos;t be that essential, surely?
